Check out these tips for how you can be a more approachable and open parent.
Being askable means being approachable, open, and willing to discuss any questions your kid throws at you. This is a skill you can improve! Here are a few tips:
1) Ignore the pressure of "the talk". Conversations about puberty, sex, and relationships are not one time talks! Share information in short bits. And when you bumble an answer, take a breath and come back to the topic another time.
2) Just start. Parents often become paralyzed because they aren't sure what to say. You might worry you'll say the wrong thing, say too much, or not say enough. You do not need to be perfect! Showing up for your child with care and openness is a feeling they will remember more than any specific word you say.
3) Practice can help. Practicing what you would like to say to your child by talking it through with a friend or partner can build confidence and help calm your nerves.
4) Educate yourself. Most parents didn't get good sex education themselves. Reading some books about puberty or reviewing reliable sources online can be a good place for you to start. Check out more of our tips and resources for suggestions on where to start.
